The Rural Side of Suburbia is how I refer to where our home is. It is in a mostly rural area Northeast of the City of Cincinnati, closer to the city of Lebanon, home of Kings Island Amusement Park. However, I am surrounded by suburbs, including one of about 500 houses across the street from me, where every house is one of a few designs the builder offers for that subdivision, sitting on a quarter acre lot. My side of the street, I have one of the smallest lots at 1.67 acres. I bought this property in the Spring of 2013 after looking for a place where I would be more free than I was when living in the city. The house is small compared to those across the street, with 2 bedrooms, 1 bath and and just under 1000 sf, but it was mostly the property that sold me on buying here. Some features include a two-car detached garage, small greenhouse, quarter acre pond, shed/chicken coop, and a large 30’x100′ garden area. There is also plenty of room to plant fruit trees, vines, and bushes, along with established flower gardens. All of this adds up to be what I call my “Starter Homestead”. Eventually, I hope to move up to more land, further out in the country, where I will have even more freedom and ability to expand on my current path to be food independent, self reliant, and off-grid.
